  • About the Symphonic Band Recording Series
The current series of "LIVE - IN CONCERT" compact disc recordings by the University of Illinois Symphonic Band -- now known as the Illinois Wind Symphony -- started as a visionary project begun in the early 1950s by Mark Hindsley, then Director of Bands. Harry Begian continued the recordings throughout his directorship, and the vast resource continues to expand with the leadership of James F. Keene, current Director of Bands. These recordings provide a valuable resource of repertoire for music educators, professional musicians, and band/wind ensemble enthusiasts.

As technology advanced and costs escalated, the LP phonograph recordings were discontinued in the late 1980s and cassette tapes were produced. A few performances on the CD series were originally produced on records and tapes and have been re-mastered on compact disc. Nearly all the selections were recorded live in concert, thereby accompanied by the occasional noise and the dreaded cough (even a mute drop on one occasion). However, these minor flaws are more than compensated for by the expression, nuance, energy, and excitement that is to be heard in "LIVE - IN CONCERT."

    Smart Search Tips
Refine your search string or search for fewer words at a time to get better results.

For example, if you are searching for "Hutcheson," one might try Hutcheson, Hutchison, or simply Hutch.

If searching for Nile Army, one might try searching for a single word, such as Army.

When searching for transliterated words, be sure to try multiple variations of the word, or search by the portion of the word common to all spellings.

For example, if searching for Tchaikovsky, one might also try the word form as Tschaikovsky or as Chaikovsky, in addition to the more common Tchaikovsky. The endings of such words vary as well, so one might spell this same search string as Tchaikowsky, Tchaikowski, Tchaikovsky, or Tchaikovski

Simpler still, search by the portion of the word common to all spellings. Following our example, to search for Tchaikovsky, we could search against the string "chaik".

    Title containing the following keyword(s)

    Conductor containing the following keyword(s)
    Specific Recording(s) by number (i.e. 125)
